Star Trek Deep Space Nine (DS9)

Following the tragedy of his wife's death fighting the Borg at Wolf 359, Sisko entered a dark period for three years at Utopia Planetia and very nearly resigned from Starfleet rather than take the Deep Space Nine assignment — until an encounter with the Bajorans' "Prophet" aliens and the discovery of their wormhole jump-started his healing and set him on an ongoing journey in that role, energizing his life once again.

Though Kira has always possessed the tactical and strategic skills to do her job exceptionally well, it is in interpersonal communication, self-assurance, and finding the imagination extinguished by a refugee's atrophied childhood where she has grown the most since this officer first encountered her in 2369. Having lived on the edge of life and death for so long, Kira's emotions are always close to the surface and they can be unusually strong: love, grief and anger being the most prevalent.

Bashir first recalls wanting to be a doctor at age 5, when he sewed up his teddy bear Kukulaka as his first "patient." Five years later, while living on Invernia II where his father, a Federation diplomat, was stationed, a massive ionic storm caused the needless death of a same-aged native girl; it was an incident

Found adrift and alone in the Denorious Belt in his natural gelatinous state with no clue to his origin, this unique shapeshifter was returned to Cardassian-occupied Bajor in 2356 and given to Dr. Mora Pol at the Bajoran Institute for Science to research under much pressure. However, after a lifetime of wondering, it was not until early 2371 that Odo discovered he was one of 100 changeling Founders sent out at an unspecified

As the only Klingon in Starfleet, Worf has already achieved an illustrious and honorable career aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise as well as played a key role in Empire politics, but he keenly feels the effects of an often tragic life caught uniquely between the two conflicting cultures — immediately evidenced by the traditional Klingon baldrics he wears over his Starfleet uniform. This inner-felt conflict stems in part from his perception of honor as taught but not always practiced by his native people, and is complicated by family relationships which echo his duality of culture in both his personal and public life.

O'Brien joined Starfleet as an impulsive act two days before he was supposed to leave for the unwanted Aldebaran Music Academy to play cello, as his father had always wished. The elder O'Brien — who'd made him practice every day and sent in his recorded audition — was furious, but calmed down and later accepted his son's choice proudly. Even so, O'Brien got to be quite good at the cello, and has kept up his public playing; one of his favorite composers is Minezaki.

The eighth eventual Trill host of the symbiont Dax is the discoverer of the Bajoran wormhole to the Gamma Quadrant, which catapulted the area into the galactic hotseat. The perspective of seven previous lifetimes has left her with an extremely broad view of life which surprisingly skews to the unpredictable and even mischievous rather than the staid and conservative, while symbiosis itself at times has proved to be problematic in her off-world career.

The Destiny is now preparing to leave the Trill homeworld after making a stopover to visit our young crewmate, Ezri Tigan — now know as Ezri Dax. Ensign Dax, after several visits with the Symbiosis Institute, is still experiencing a great deal of disorientation after being joined to the symbiont which was

Jake Sisko has a surprisingly healthy mental outlook considering the traumatic childhood of losing his mother at age 11 during the infamous Borg massacre at the Battle of Wolf 359; he was unconscious when his father barely saved him from their wrecked cabin on the U.S.S. Saratoga and fled to escape pods. The memory is ever-present but only occasionally haunts him, as on the fourth anniversary of her death, whenever the Captain leaves for a risky mission that might leave him orphaned again, and

He engages Odo in a running battle of wits, but while it gets vicious at times, there is mutual respect and even affection present. Despite his pride at escaping detection, he has been caught red-handed in crime more than once but served only petty penalties. He still retains old Cardassian security clearances through Level 7 — one higher than Odo — and knows enough about engineering to install a small cloaking device in ships not normally made for them. Lock-picking of all kinds is another skill.

 Defiant, U.S.S. (NX-74205)

The class ship of its type is the only one produced as a compact yet heavily armed escort ship to meet the Borg threat, with no scientific or other extras save what is needed for combat. Designed partly by Commander Sisko from Utopia Planetia and then mothballed in the Sol system, Sisko returned to Deep Space Nine with it in 2371 to help meet the Dominion.

Previously called by its original creators "Terok Nor," this old Cardassian mining station orbiting the planet of Bajor was built in 2351 and abandoned 18 years later as the Cardassian occupation of Bajor came to a close and the Cardassian retreated from the system.
