 Benjamin Linus, more commonly known as Ben, is a long-time resident of the Island and a former leader of the Others. He arrived as a child, brought by his father Roger who worked for the DHARMA Initiative. After being educated on the Island, Ben became a workman for the Initiative. At some point, however, he allied himself with the Hostiles. After the destruction of the Initiative on the Island in the Purge, which Ben himself was part of, he became the leader of the successor group to the Hostiles known as the Others. In 2004, when Oceanic Flight 815 crashed on the island, the survivors came head-to-head with Ben and the Others on many occasions. Ben ordered the Others to a location called the Temple for safety against the freighter and Full Name: Johnathan Locke John Locke is one of the middle section survivors of Oceanic Flight 815. His paralysis was immediately healed upon crashing on the Island, which has ultimately led him to believe he has some sort of special connection to the Island. He is sometimes shown in opposition to Benjamin Linus, although they share several traits including the ability to commune with Jacob. Seen as antithetical to Jack Shephard, he and Jack are philosophical opposites and used to share leadership among the survivors. Locke had eventually separated himself from most of the  James Ford, better known by the alias "Sawyer", is one of the middle section survivors of Oceanic Flight 815. His rural Southern accent, selfishness, machismo, and folksy use of oft-abrasive nicknames belie his sophisticated and tender sides as an avid reader and a caring lover—elements of his personality that have become more apparent as he has spent more time on the Island. Sawyer's early life was ravaged when his father killed young James's mother and himself, a tragedy the boy blamed on the con artist who seduced and swindled his mother. As a child, James wrote a letter to this con man, whom he knew only as "Mr. Sawyer", hoping to deliver it and its promise of vengeance to him in person one day, and taking on the name as an alias for a series of his own con schemes. Full Name: Charlie Hieronymus Pace Charlie Hieronymus Pace was a survivor from the middle section of Oceanic 815. Before the crash, he was the bassist and principal songwriter for the rock band Drive Shaft. When Flight 815 crashed, Charlie was snorting heroin in one of the plane's bathrooms. His drug addiction and crippling self-doubt were the biggest obstacles in his life. Like many of the survivors, the crash provided Charlie with a fresh start. On  Desmond David Hume was the lone resident of the Swan at the time of the Flight 815 crash. Locke, Kate, and Jack discovered him there 44 days after the crash, after they had blown open the Hatch. After his failed attempt to leave the Island on his sailboat, Desmond joined the camp of survivors. Following the destruction of the Swan, Desmond gained a mysterious ability to see flashes of the future, with which he predicted Charlie's imminent death. During the helicopter ride Full Name: Sayid Jarrah Sayid Jarrah is a middle section survivor of Oceanic Flight 815. A courageous man and a competent leader, Sayid maintains a conservative manner which reflects both strength and spirituality, and tries to atone for the demons in his past. Sayid spent much of his adult life searching for his childhood-love, Nadia, hoping she is alive. Sayid's past as a torturer constantly plagues him. Through his skills and leadership, he plays a key  Hugo Reyes, more commonly known by his nickname "Hurley", is one of the middle section survivors of Oceanic Flight 815. Hurley's father disappeared when he was ten and did not return until almost 17 years had passed. Afterwards, Hurley developed an eating disorder, and after a traumatic accident he was sent to a mental asylum where he started seeing an imaginary person. Ever since, he has changed and has been extremely conscious of his sanity and how people view him. When Hurley won the lottery, he was not overjoyed, instead he was fearful that his life was going to change. Hurley is typically happy-go-lucky and keeps the spirits of his fellow survivors up. He has an eating disorder but managed to overcome that with the help of Libby, and has even stuck to it after her death. Hurley is also the voice of reason in the group and uses his common sense to solve difficult situations. Typically friendly, he and Charlie Pace seemed to develop a close friendship. Ever since winning the lottery with the mysterious numbers, he has searched for an answer for the Full Name: Jack Shephard Dr. Jack Shephard is a spinal surgeon and the de facto leader of the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815. Jack has control issues and trouble dealing with situations that he cannot fix. However, this ability to solve problems through reason has made him able to function well during a crisis. Jack is usually in control of his life and emotions and is able to keep a cool head. He is commonly looked upon as the leader of the survivors and was on good terms with everyone, especially Kate and Juliet. However, after he rid Benjamin
 Jin-Soo Kwon is one of the middle section survivors of Oceanic Flight 815. Jin is the only survivor to not speak the native language within the group - English. This caused a constant language barrier but after Sun revealed she spoke English to the group, he began to overcome this struggle and has Full Name: Sun-Hwa Kwon Sun-Hwa Kwon born March 20, 1980, is one of the middle section survivors of the crash of Oceanic Flight 815. She was traveling on the plane with her husband, Jin-Soo Kwon. Their marriage was very unstable, on and off the Island, due mainly to Jin's controlling and violent nature, but also because of Sun's many secrets. Sun spent the first forty-odd days on the Island disconnected from the rest of the survivors, as nobody,  Katherine Anne Austen, more commonly known as Kate, is one of the middle section survivors from the crash of Oceanic Flight 815. Kate was born in Iowa to an abusive father whom she eventually killed when she was finally of age to run and take care of herself. Kate was pursued for three years by the U.S. Marshall and was in his custody when she crashed on the Island. On the Island, Kate formed strong bonds with Jack and Sawyer. She became engaged to Jack after the rescue, but their relationship ended. Resourceful, quick-witted and mysteriously reclusive, she participated in many rescue and Name: Claire Littleton Claire Littleton is one of the middle section survivors of Oceanic Flight 815. She is Jack Shephard's half-sister, although she does not know this. She is the mother of Aaron Littleton who was born on the Island soon after the crash, and has done her best to take care of Aaron. When she was seventeen, Claire was involved in a car crash which caused her mother to fall into a coma for five years, but in turn led her to meet her  Dr. Juliet Burke was a member of the Others who later joined up with Jack's group of survivors. During her time with the Others, she lived at the Barracks, but grew increasingly desperate to get off of the Island to visit her dying sister. However, Ben prolonged her stay on the island indefinitely because he thought of her as "his." Juliet has a background in reproductive medicine, and acted as the fertility doctor for the Others after being recruited by Richard Alpert for Mittelos Bioscience. She left the Others with hopes of leaving the Island with the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815, but was distrusted by The Island is the principal location for the events of Lost. The Island is treated as if it is a character, with its own desires and designs of its own. The Island displays unusual "powers" that can apparently function beyond its geographical territory, into the outside world. The Island is notoriously difficult to find and can apparently "move" by an unknown method. Ben was banished to the Sahara desert ten months into the future (2005), and since then discovered that the Oceanic Six had also left the Island. Full Name: James "Sawyer" Ford On the Island, Sawyer has used his abilities to con people to accomplish various ends, and has hoarded material possessions to leverage power. He escaped from an enslavement by the Others with Kate, and he was in a romantic relationship with her. After finally killing the real Sawyer (revealed to be John Locke's biological father, Anthony Cooper), Sawyer joined Locke and a small number of survivors sheltered in the Barracks, but has since left the faction. Before rescue, Sawyer told Kate to do a favor for him back home, but it's unknown what he asked. He chose to stay behind on the Island, which has since moved.  the Island, he formed a relationship with Claire Littleton and her son Aaron. After avoiding deaths foreseen by Desmond several times, Charlie finally died willingly to save the other survivors. He drowned on Day 91, and after returning from the the Looking Glass station, Desmond told those on the beach of his death. After Hurley gets off the Island, he is haunted by visions of Charlie, who tells him that he must return to the Island. Full Name: Desmond David Hume to the freighter, Desmond's consciousness from the past (1996) began drifting to the present (2004) until Desmond made contact with his constant, his long-lost love, Penelope Widmore. On December 31, 2004, after over three years on the Island, Desmond was rescued along with the Oceanic Six by Penelope herself.  role in the survival of his group, and exploring the Island's secrets. However, his happiness was short-lived when Nadia was supposedly targeted by Charles Widmore for unknown reasons, and has since joined Benjamin Linus in his war against Widmore for two years afterwards in revenge for his wife's death. Although he was originally very loyal to Jack, Hurley was the first survivor to join Locke's faction, separating himself from the survivors. After reuniting with Jack and a few survivors from his group, Hurley was one of the few people who managed to board the helicopter after the freighter exploded. Hurley was also part of the Oceanic Six cover story, and carried on happily with his life for about a year before he began to see visions of the late Charlie off the Island. Eventually, he was readmitted to the Santa Rosa Mental Institute and conversed with Charlie, along with other deceased people, causing his mental state to deteriorate  Linus of his tumor, the survivors were momentarily untrustworthy of him when he returned to camp with Juliet. Jack's rivalry with Locke escalated when Locke destroyed the submarine and ruined Jack's chance to get off the island. Jack and five other survivors have managed to escape the island by using a helicopter from the freighter, although they were forced to leave everyone else behind when Ben moved the island. Since the rescue, Jack has learned of his family relation to Claire and Aaron, has laid his father to rest and was engaged to Kate. Unfortunately, certain events, including a visit from Jeremy Bentham and visions of his father, have caused his resolve to collapse. Now a broken man addicted to pills and alcohol, Jack flies every week in the hopes his plane will crash and he will find his way back to the Island so he can fix all the bad things that have been happening there and rescue everyone left behind. However, Ben has informed him that the Island won't let him come alone; all of them have to go back, including the late Bentham. Full Name: Jin-Soo Kwon  even Jin, knew she spoke English. Some of the secrets from her previous life began to resurface on the Island, such as Jin's infertility and Sun's affair: these revelations caused several rifts in their marriage. Despite these difficulties, Sun and Jin managed to arrive on the freighter: when the helicopter landed to collect them, Sun boarded it, thinking Jin was behind her, but Frank lifted off without waiting and the ship exploded without warning with Jin on-board. When she returned to civilization as one of the Oceanic Six, she blamed her father and Jack for Jin's death, and she remains on good terms with only Hurley. Sun has contacted Charles Widmore because they have common interests, but her true intentions are unknown. In the aftermath of her very public trial for murder and other charges, Kate agrees to 10 years' probation with the condition that she must remain in the state of California. Aaron Littleton lives with her and he believes that Kate is his mother.  true father for the first time since he left. During her time on the Island, she entered an inconsistent relationship with fellow survivor, Charlie Pace; however she was reluctant to let Charlie into Aaron's life because of Charlie's drug use and erratic behavior. Aaron was a focal interest point within the Others, and Claire was almost deceived into giving him away and on many occasions on the island Claire's faith towards motherhood has been tested. Following Charlie's tragic death, Claire joined Locke's group. She left Locke's group with Aaron, Sawyer and Miles, and then followed her dead father Christian Shephard into the jungle.
